The Fellowship Program in Primary and Revision Arthroplasty at Knappschaft Kliniken Dortmund is designed for national and international Orthopedic and Trauma surgery specialists seeking to further advance their surgical expertise and scientific knowledge in the field of modern joint replacement.

Under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Mustafa Citak, Director of the West German Center of Excellence for Arthroplasty, fellows gain
comprehensive insights into modern surgical techniques, complex reconstructions, and scientific and academic methodologies. The program combines hands-on experience in the operating room with evidence-based medicine and international scientific exchange. The program begins in October 2026.

More About the Program Director, Prof. Dr. med. Mustafa Citak

The fellowship is led by Prof. Dr. med. Mustafa Citak, Director of the West German Center of Excellence for Arthroplasty at Knappschaft Kliniken Dortmund.

With more than 300 scientific publications and book chapters to his credit, Prof. Citak is one of the world’s leading experts in the field of primary and revision joint replacement. His research focuses in particular on the further development of joint replacement, complex revision joint replacement, and the prevention and treatment of periprosthetic infections (PJI).

Prof. Citak is a member of renowned international professional societies, he combines clinical expertise with scientific research. Fellows benefit from his many years of experience, modern surgical treatment concepts, and the close integration of clinical practice and academic teaching.

Eligibility Requirements

The Fellowship is intended for board-certified specialists in orthopedics and trauma surgery who:

  • have completed their board certification training
  • have a particular interest in primary and revision joint replacement surgery
  • are motivated to pursue clinical and scientific continuing education

Participants are selected on an individual basis based on their applications.

Program Duration

The fellowship program begins in October 2026.

The duration of the fellowship depends on individual training goals
and is at least four weeks.
